Mr. Vesely is Co-Chair of the Firm's Tax Section. Mr. Vesely specializes in state and local tax matters, including income, franchise, sales and use, property, employment and other taxes. His practice consists of administrative and judicial tax litigation, state and local tax planning and transactional work.

Prior to joining the firm in 1985, Mr. Vesely was a tax attorney with Getty Oil Company, the State of California Department of Justice Tax Division, and the State of California Franchise Tax Board. He has litigated state and local tax matters in both state and federal trial courts, courts of appeal, the California Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Vesely was lead counsel in Appeal of Save Mart Supermarkets, the first case decided in California involving the manufacturers' investment credit and in which the Franchise Tax Board's regulation defining qualified taxpayers was invalidated. Mr. Vesely was also lead counsel in Guy F. Atkinson Company of California v. Franchise Tax Board, which involved the application of tax credits in a unitary business setting and in Navistar International Transportation Corp., et al. v. State Board of Equalization, which involved the taxability of intangibles under the California sales and use tax law.

Mr. Vesely has lectured before such groups as the Committee on State Taxation, California Franchise Tax Board Policy Conference, Georgetown Institute on State and Local Tax, National Institute on State and Local Taxation, American Petroleum Institute, Tax Executives Institute, California Manufacturers Association, California CPA Society, Institute of Property Taxation, State Bar of California, Interstate Tax Press, Council For International Tax Education and Bar Association of San Francisco. Mr. Vesely has published numerous articles on state taxation and is the author of the chapter on Judicial Remedies and co-author of the chapter on Administrative Procedures in California Tax Analysis, a Commerce Clearing House publication. Mr. Vesely recently co-authored with Kerne H.O. Matsubara, Distinctions Between Unitary and Nonunitary Businesses: A Practical Guide, published by Commerce Clearing House in the fall of 2001.
